Getting Into the Holiday Spirit

For the past couple of years, It’s taken Phil and I a long time to get into the holiday spirit. Last year it was really bad and we finally got around to getting a Christmas tree the day before Christmas. This year we wanted to change this trend and decided to make a concerted effort to get into the spirit early in the season. Here’s what we did:

Listened to Christmas Music

One of our local radio stations, 106.7 Lite fm started playing Christmas music 24 hours a day beginning in late November. We’ve been tuning in to this station since then. Singing along to catchy Christmas songs can really brighten your mood, and it has really helped us get into the spirit.

Saw a Christmas Show

This year we purchased tickets to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. In my lifetime, I have probably seen the show around 20 times, but I still love it. Z.E.N. had never seen the show, so Phil and I decided that he was finally old enough to sit through the 90 minute show. We were really excited to introduce him to this wonderful Christmas show. We all enjoyed the show and left Radio City feeling warm and fuzzy inside. This show never gets old and never fails to lift and inspire our spirit.

Started Decorating Earlier

Immediately after seeing the Christmas show, we walked into the nearest Duane Reade Store which was directly across the street from Radio City Music Hall on 51st street. We wanted to get an early start on decorating and were in search of some Christmas decor. I knew that Duane Reade carried just about everything you could imagine in their stores, but I wasn’t sure what if any holiday themed items they would have. We were pleasantly surprised to see that they had a pretty good selection of decorations and other holiday themed items.

We’ve had the same Christmas tree decorations since Phil and I got married 7 years ago, so he was keen on updating them.  He really liked these sets:

Z.E.N., who is enamored with New York, really like these New York themed holiday décor items.

Duane Reade also carries a good selection of holiday lights.  They even had LED lights at a very reasonable price.

After browsing through the whole store, we made our final selections and checked out.  You can view my Google + story to see my entire Duane Reade shopping experience.  We were really impressed by the quantity and quality of all the Christmas décor items we found at Duane Reade.  So make sure you check them out if you need anything Christmas or holiday related.  For more information about Duane Reade, please be sure to visit and follow Duane Reade on  Facebook and on Twitter.

I must say that this fun filled family outing really got us into the Christmas spirit.  We had not yet purchased our Christmas tree, but we vowed that we would buy one right away, so we could decorate it with our newly purchased decorations, and that is just what we did.

  • Aww this is a cute post! Great ideas for getting into the Christmas Spirit! Don’t forget watching Christmas Movies! #Commenthour

  • I started out in November Jollier than an elf…. then it fizzled. Now? I just want it to be over with. So much has been going on I haven’t had time to get all the things done that need done before Sunday. Shopping for gifts. Baking. Menu planning. Food shopping. Cooking. Cleaning…. the list goes on. Throw in birth of 1st grandbaby with some minor complications that keep popping up, an out of town relative coming to crash here Friday-Sunday to visit a sick relative… Chaos!!!
    Is it January yet?

  • Great ideas! And what fabulous memories and traditions you are passing along to your little guy.

I’d love to see that Radio City show you went too…

    Merry Christmas! 🙂
    p.s. I’m here from #commenthour

    • Thank You. In addition to NYC, the Radio city Christmas show is now actually playing in Boston, Ma, Nashville, TN, and Durham, NC. Hopefully you’ll get to see it one year.
