5 Tips for Remaining Young at Heart

casual woman dancing - © Zdenka Darula - Fotolia.comNo matter your age, you can always feel young at heart if you try. While different people may approach feeling youthful in different ways, these five tips will help you remain young at heart whether you’re forty-five or eighty-five:

1. Join a club: Choose something you enjoy doing and try to find a club that has like-minded members. It’s ideal if your club meets occasionally so that you can socialize with people who share your interests. It may be a chess club, garden club or bridge club. You may enjoy sharing your opinions on literature with a book club. If you can’t find a club to suit your needs, why not create your own?

2. Help others: When you help other people, especially those who are less fortunate than you, you have less time to feel down or sorry for yourself. That’s why helping others is so satisfying. You can do this through church groups or on your own. Help feed the homeless not just around the holidays but all year round. Take part in charity drives or donate canned foods to various groups in need.

3. Socialize with friends: Being around people who you love spending time with can do wonders for how you feel. You can laugh with them when you’re having a great time together, but you can also rely on them for support when times are tough. Maintain close friendships with regular outings, phone calls and visits.

4. Take a class: Is there a skill you always wanted to learn but never had the time? If you’re retired, it’s a wonderful time in your life to take a class from a local community college or other institution. Learn how to play the piano or paint still life pictures. You can also learn how to bowl, cook Asian food or learn new computer skills.

5. Get a pet: Caring for a pet can help you feel needed. It doesn’t have to be a large pet that requires a lot of work, either. A hamster or parakeet is a good pet for anyone who wants a smaller animal to care for.

You never have to “act your age” if you don’t want to, particularly if you feel much younger than your years. Select ways to remain young at heart that work well for you, and you’ll stay youthful for years to come.
