How I’m Preparing My Skin For The Summer Sun

[This post was commissioned by Collective Bias® and Duane Reade]

I love going to drugstores stores and looking around at the makeup counters. I could spend hours looking at all the new colors and smelling the perfumes. However, there is always so much to choose from and sometimes I wonder which products will work best for me since my skin has changed so much over the years.

Lately it seems like nothing seems to work for me and my skin has been looking dull and dry. I decided it was time to solve that especially since summer is approaching. I had heard that the LOOK boutique located inside the Duane Reade store at 40 Wall Street in NYC was offering free skin consultations. I was headed there anyway to check out their health and wellness fair so I made a mental note to make sure to have my skin analyzed. This may not sound like a great value or even worth your time. But let me tell you, there are many benefits to seeking out a skin consultation before summer. Photo Jun 04, 12 19 39 PMa

1) Determine Products that are Best for your Skin Type

Here’s the thing, people’s skin type can change based on weather and age. So your products should change along with it. That seems like a simple concept, however, most of us do not follow that rule. If you are anything like me, you have a routine and don’t think to change what you are comfortable with. I’ve been using the same products for years. I switch it up a bit at times but tend to stick with what I’m using at hand, even if it doesn’t seem to be providing any visible benefit. What I discovered during my skin consultation is that my skin is generally dry with an oily T-Zone. I also learned that I had a lot of clogged pores and that my skin was dehydrated.

Melissa who did my consultation recommended products that would address the issues she found.  Specifically, she recommended the Mychelle Dermaceuticals Fruit Fiesta peel to exfoliate the skin.

In addition, she recommended the Vichy Aqualia Thermal Paraben Free Serum to hydrate the skin.

2) Learn about the importance of using Products with SPF

Too often I buy products without even considering if it contains SPF. I used to believe that unless I was out on the beach, I didn’t need to worry about protecting myself. Plus, I hated how so many sunscreen products leave you looking like a ghost and hated the smell of it.

After my consultation I learned how wrong I was and how important it is to use sunscreen every day. In fact, that same day, I heard a news report on the radio about a study that was conducted which concluded that people who used sunscreen daily had less wrinkles. Melissa recommended the La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Sunscreen Lotion. She stated that it blended into the skin very well so you won’t wind up with that ghostly look. However, I decided to go with a different product which I had heard good things about and that was a tad bit less costly.  Instead, I purchased the L’Oreal Paris Sublime Sun Advanced Sunscreen SPF 50+.  It literally melts into your skin.

3) Finding the Right Summer Color

Just as my skin type changes from winter to summer, so does my color palette. I usually stay within the same color family but I like to change it up and go for bolder colors to go with my summer glow. After my skin consultation, I browsed around to see all the new colors that are available.

4) Finding New Products

In addition to seeing the new colors, I also got a chance to see some new products. It seems that every day scientists are discovering something new to help our skin. At the skin consultation, I was able to try out these new products and see what is now out there that is better for my skin. As I said, I like to stick with my routine. So many times I end up using the same products year after year. The consultation gave me an opportunity to change or add some things and not be left in the same makeup rut.

As you can see, there are many benefits to a skin consultation at a makeup counter. However, the truly best part of this is that it is free! You can enjoy all of these benefits and pamper yourself without feeling guilty about the cost.

If you haven’t enjoyed your free skin consultation to prepare for summer, head to the LOOK boutique and get one done. Your skin will thank you!

  • Oh wow, they have a really big selection! And that section is awesome. I had no idea you could actually get an appointment and talk with a real live person. Awesome cool. I have a summer routine for my skin, but I LOVE looking at everything in the store!

  • Wow, that is so cool they have a consultant right there in the store for you to talk to! I love that! I wish we had a Duane Reed here in our area!

  • Looks like you got some great products to use. I have been getting in that mode as well, getting ready for summer and I want my skin to look it’s best!

  • OMG, Girl! That Duane Reade store looks POSH! And they sell that mega expensive face stuff? That’s AWESOME! I use sunscreen daily, but it’s only 15SPF and I’m pretty fair. I have crows feet and some deep lines in my forehead already and I’m only 31! I love how you say that the L’oreal melts into your face, so I’m going to head to my local Walgreens tomorrow and hope they have it!

  • I’m very much like you! I love to explore but I tend to stick with the products I’m familiar with. I know my skin’s needs have changed over the past (ahem) so many years and I have no doubt I’d benefit from expert advice. The selection at that Look Boutique is phenomenal – I’ve no doubt I’d be happy to explore all day, but what a help to have expert advice to guide you in the right direction! Thanks so much for sharing all you’ve learned and about your experience 🙂
