How to Spring Clean Your Dental Routine

Spring has officially arrived. For many people, spring is all about clean, fresh starts. The warmer weather and blooming flowers of spring may send some of you into a spring cleaning frenzy around your homes. But before you grab your duster and rubber gloves, don’t forget your dental routine could use some sprucing up as well.

1. Brush for Two Minutes, Two Times a Day. Brushing your teeth twice a day will help keep the plaque and bacteria away.

2. Replace Your Toothbrush. According to the American Dental Association, it’s best to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

3. Sanitize Your Toothbrush Holder. A toothbrush holder is a major breeding ground for germs. Be sure to rinse and sterilized your toothbrush holder as a part of your spring cleaning tasks.

4. Deep Clean Your Children’s Mouthguards. Mouthguards can be a breeding spot for dangerous bacteria that cause cavities, periodontitis, and possibly tooth loss. So, it is important that you keep mouthguards clean and germ-free by washing them with soap, a toothbrush, and cool running water. 

5. Change Your Toothpaste. Don’t Forget to Floss. Flossing will help loosen and remove plaque beneath the gum line that could potentially lead to inflammation or gum disease.

Schedule a Dental Cleaning. While good dental hygiene can go a long way toward preventing plaque and tartar, it’s nearly impossible to remove with regular brushing or flossing. Regularly visiting the dentist, at least twice a year, helps to ensure that your oral health is in its best possible shape.
