Improve Your Child’s Math Skills with Smartick

Last year, Z.E.N. picked up some kind of stomach bug and wound up missing almost 2 weeks of school. He fell behind in math and just never seemed to be able to catch up. I had inquired about tutoring at his school and was advised that they did not have any tutoring programs in place. His teacher had set up an account with an online math program that was supposed to help him with his math skills. That program helped him to improve his speed and accuracy in answering problems which was very helpful. In addition, I found worksheets and video lessons online that helped him get through it.IMG_8463

While searching for online math help, I came across some subscription-based services that looked very interesting. I bookmarked a bunch of them with the intention of looking into them later on. Coincidentally, one of the programs, Smartick reached out to me asking if I wanted to try out their program. Of course, I agreed! Z.E.N. has been using their program on and off for the past 2 months and I truly believe that it is helping him become more confident in math.

Fractions lesson on Smartick appSmartick is an online math program that is designed to improve not just basic math, but also logical thinking, and mental calculation. It is designed for children 4 to 14 years old. There are several things I like about Smartick. Firstly, the online math program is presented as a game rather than a course. This makes it more fun. The game is also incentivized. Students are presented with problems, and once they have solved them, or attempted to solve them, they are awarded check marks. These checks can then be cashed in as a kind of virtual currency to be used in an interactive world that includes a school, treehouse, and home.

The app is very easy to use. When you sign up, your child will be given an assessment, the results of which are then used to customize the lessons. After that, your child is supposed to complete a 15-minute session of Smartick every single day.

We tend to skip weekends though. Smartick uses artificial intelligence to determine which lessons are most useful and relevant for your child and presents them with no input required from you and allows your child to progress at his or her own pace. After each lesson, the app will send you a progress report. The app will also send you an email to let you know if your child skipped a lesson. You also have access to the Parent’s Dashboard where I can go for more in-depth analysis of the lessons that your child recently completed.

Numerous studies have shown that students can show significant improvement in math skills by practicing on a regular basis. Smartick has proven to be incredibly successful in other countries and seems set to change the way 4 to 14-year-olds learn math here in the US too. And with subscriptions starting at just $1 a day, it’s a lot cheaper than hiring a math tutor.
