Jakemans Natural Throat and Chest Remedies – A New Discovery

My favorite season is summer.  I love being able to bask in the sun and step outside without having to layer on a whole bunch of clothing.  I am not fond of the cold, at all!  As summer comes to an end, I start to get sad because I know what’s coming soon, the dreaded winter.

In fact, as soon as the temperature started to dip, it starts.  Sniffles, coughs, stuffy noses, you name it.  I always try natural/herbal remedies first, but if for some reason they don’t work, I will not hesitate to use over the counter or prescription medicines because I get really miserable when I’m sick. So now is the time of year when I go through my cabinet to see what my winter remedy arsenal looks like.

I like to make sure that I have some cold remedies on hand because there’s no worse feeling than waking up with a cold and not having any kind of cold remedy on hand.  So far, I have a good supply.  I also like to increase my intake of Vitamin C as a preventative measure, so Philip recently bought this huge bottle of Vitamin C.

But I noticed that I didn’t have any throat lozenges.  Once we start using the heat our house tends to get very dry which causes my throat to get dry and scratchy.  A humidifier helps sometimes, but not always, so I like to keep lozenges around for when I need them.

I recently heard about Jakemans, which is a brand of throat lozenges that I had not heard of before.  I heard they had them at Duane Reade so I made sure to look for them when I went to their store.  I scoped out the selection of Lozenges to see what they had and unfortunately did not find the Jakemans Throat and Chest Lozenges.

That’s because they were not kept in the same section.  I didn’t realize this at the time and wound up finding them after making a second trip to Duane Reade.  They were way down on the very bottom shelf a few feet away form the rest of the lozenges. Who knew they wouldn’t be with all the other lozenges?  I guess they’re special!

Although I have never heard of Jakemans before, a little research shows that that they have been around for over 100 years!  Starting out in England in 1907, the small family owned business of Jakemans has grown into an international name. With so many years of experience crafting lozenges, it is no wonder that Jakemans has had such impressive staying power. They state that their lozenges are crafted from only the very best natural ingredients, carefully selected by expert confectioners and that these Lozenges have always been, and continue to be free from chemicals that many other companies use. They blend the natural ingredients of menthol and various plant flavors including lemon anise and honey.

I purchased the honey and lemon flavored lozenges so I could try them out and I must say the honey and lemon flavor was not bad.  It tasted somewhat medicinal.  Nevertheless, it really worked at soothing my scratchy throat. The menthol was pretty prominent and I can see how it can really help if you have a stuffy nose.

I think I will definitely buy this again when I need some more.

  • Oh I hope they have something like this in stores where I am. We don’t have a duane reed. 🙁 But I really like the Natural ingredients this offers.

  • I am always looking for good throat lozenges. My husband throat gets dry also when we turn on the heat. Thank you for sharing.

  • I had never heard of these either, but I love that they contain more natural ingredients. I will have to look for them here. Thanks for sharing!

  • I’ve tried Jakemans cough drops and they really work. We don’t have Duane Reade in North Carolina where I live but I found them at Harris Teeter. They have a very pleasant flavor and aren’t overly powerful. I liked their Facebook page (Jakemans Throat & Chest Lozenges) and they sent me a message asking for an address to send a free sample. Pretty cool!
