The Many Benefits Of A Protein Rich Breakfast

Benefits Of A Protein Rich Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people either skip it altogether or fill themselves up with high carbohydrate foods. Personally, I just recently became convinced of the benefits of a protein rich breakfast, and have now made it a habit to start every day this way. The results of this regime have been considerable.

You see, not too long ago, I had the opportunity to hear a very well known dietician speak about healthy living.  One thing she mentioned that stuck with me is the importance of eating protein at every meal.  For one thing, I have found that protein at breakfast time keeps me satisfied for longer. When I used to eat toast or sugary cereals in the morning I would find myself wanting to snack before lunch. These days I never get those mid morning cravings; in fact, I find that I am less hungry throughout the day. Not only does this keep my mind on what I am doing, but I now find it much easier to control my weight.

Another benefit is that the protein nourishes your brain, and keeps you more alert and focused throughout the morning. Recent tests have shown that the brain actually reacts positively to protein eaten at breakfast time. Whereas sugary or starchy foods raise the blood sugar, often causing an energy dip a couple of hours later, proteins keep your blood sugar at an even level.

All of this is particularly important for children and teens. Many of them like to skip breakfast, or to take a sugary snack, but as parents we should be discouraging this. Our children will perform best at school if they have a high protein meal before they set off for the day.

There is a whole range of protein rich breakfast foods to choose from. Eggs are an obvious choice. These can be prepared in many ways: poached, boiled or scrambled. If you have a bit more time, perhaps on a weekend, you can make an omelet with added cheese or mushrooms, or egg rich pancakes.

Lean bacon or grilled sausages are good choices. If you are in a hurry, you can have ham or cold turkey, with a crisp bread or perhaps a little bit of rye or granary bread. Cheese, particularly cottage cheese or a low fat variety, is also good.

There are plenty of choices for vegetarians, too. Try a sliced banana with low fat yoghurt, or a few spoonfuls of nut butter with seed bread. If you are one of those people who love cereals, swap your usual variety for a whole grain sugar free cereal, perhaps adding some extra seeds and nuts. For those days when you are really in a hurry, high protein and low sugar cereal bars are available, but make sure you check the packaging carefully before you buy them.

One choice I recently discovered is the new Silk Fruit&Protein.  In addition to being a protein rich beverage, it is also a great source of Vitamin D and Calcium. It is available in three different varieties, namely, Mixed Berry, Strawberry Banana, and Mango Peach.  The best thing about this beverage is that all three of us like it.  It tastes really good!

So far we have only tried the Mixed Berry variety.  We wanted to try some others so when I heard that they were now available at  Wal-Mart stores, I decided to make the trip to my local Wal-Mart to purchase them.  Unfortunately, they were not yet available at my local store.  But I really wanted to try the other flavors, so I decided to drive one town over to another Wal-Mart.  I was so disappointed to learn that they were not available at this store either.  Bummer!

For now we’ll just have to make do with our current favorites.  My own current favorite protein rich breakfast is Greek yogurt with granola. Z.E.N.’s favorite protein rich breakfast is eating a big bowl of cheerios with Silk Organic Soy Milk.  Philip really likes egg white omelets or scrambled egg whites with whole wheat toast.breakfast

Whatever you choose for yourself and your family, you will be amazed at how much better you feel, and at how much more alert you are in the mornings. If you are trying to lose weight, you will now find it so much easier. You will soon be persuaded of the benefits of a protein rich breakfast.

  • I love breakfast. I usually eat a lot during the day without thinking if what I eat is rich in protein or what. Skipping meals is unfavorable for me. Doctors says that you can get ulcer or any kind of sickness just because you skip a meal.

    • Oh wow, didn’t know you can get ulcers form skipping meals. Something to keep in mind.

  • I love eggs, as do my boys. We usually have eggs for breakfast, actually. I like to switch it up sometimes and do pancakes and bacon or something sometimes too!

    • Eggs are good sources of protein. On the weekends we like to switch it up a bit and usually have bacon and pancakes.

  • We’ve started trying to have scrambled eggs each morning. My other half likes for me to cook up bacon and put it in the fridge for him. He can grab some in the morning when things are moving too fast for us to eat with him and it still tastes good reheated in the microwave!

    • That’s a great tip. Preparing the bacon ahead of time can free up a lot of time in the mornings. Have you ever seen the pre-cooked bacon by Hormel. I usually buy it at Costco. It’s pre-cooked so all you have to do is stick it in the microwave.

  • I make sure that my kids eat breakfast in the morning, even if they claim they are not hungry, which I know they are. Normally they would eat Honey Nut Cheerios and my oldest has milk with hers. I may have to start making eggs and pancakes again during the weekends like I used to.

  • Although I have never been a big breakfast person I have been trying to eat either Chobani or Okos Greek yogurt for breakfast. Everyone here loves yogurt so its not hard to add it to meals!

  • Protein is SO important! I found this out when I became a vegetarian and had to find non-meat protein sources. And then again when I started working out and downing protein shakes afterwards. 🙂 Protein is a woman’s best friend when trying to lose weight!
