My Ice Cream Addiction

lovely couple of ice creamsHi, my name is Diane, I’m 40 years old and I am addicted to ice cream. There I said it. I don’t know when this ice cream addiction started, but it must have been when I was pretty young. I remember back in the day when the ice cream truck used to drive down my street and I would rush home to ask my mom or dad for a dollar so I could buy a vanilla ice cream cone with chocolate sprinkles. Yummy! My mom also purchased a lot of ice cream, so it was always in the house. Back then, my favorite flavors were vanilla, butter almond and butter pecan.

Fast forward to my current life and I still eat a ton of ice cream.  I can it just about every day and I don’t discriminate when it comes to flavors. Phil and Z.E.N. like it too, but not as much as I do. I know, I know, it’s high in saturated fat and sugar, but lucky for me, I have a good metabolism and the so I haven’t gained too much weight or developed any serious health problems like diabetes. Ice cream, however, can be boring at times. This is why I make it a point to stock my freezer with some alternative treats like ice cream bars, or frozen fruit bars. The fun part is that I can either buy these treats at my local grocery store, or I can make them at home myself.

When it comes to frozen treats, I prefer the ones that are chocolaty and super sweet. Some of my favorites include Häagen-Dazs bars, Good Humor bars (I love the Strawberry Shortcake variety as well as the Toasted Almond ones )and Dove bars. But hey, I’ll try just about all! Phil loves anything with caramel in it, and Z.E.N. likes chocolate covered bars.

I recently took a trip to my local stop and shop grocery store specifically to shop for ice cream.  When shopping for ice cream, I usually first take a look to see what is on sale.  Unfortunately, on this day, there were not many items on sale.  In fact, I could only find 2 items on sale.  Oh well, I still wanted to stock up on some frozen treats, so I proceeded to just browse the shelves.

I noticed that the shelves were filled with what seems like thousands of options when it comes to frozen treats. I usually reach for my favorites, but on this particular trip, I really took the time to browse and saw that their selection of frozen treats was pretty vast. I saw some well-known products like the Popsicle and klondike bars. In addition to the old standbys, I noticed lots of new treats. Also, as organic and environmentally friendly food products become increasingly popular, I noticed that frozen treat makers are marketing products featuring healthy, organic ingredients. This is an attempt to appeal to consumers like me who might not otherwise purchase such products.

There was so much to choose from which it made it hard to make a decision.  I finally decided on a box of Blue Bunny Champ mini swirls in chocolate for Z.E.N..  He loves chocolate so I knew he would love these.  For Phil, I purchased a box of Magnum Double Caramel bars.  He loves caramel and has been know to eat a whole pack of caramel chews in one setting so this is the one for him.  For myself, I chose the Blue Bunny Champ bars.  I’ve heard a lot of good things about Blue Bunny ice cream and there was a big notice on the packaging alerting me to the fact that it was made with “real” ice cream.

Frozen novelties do not always have to come from the grocery store. Some of the best frozen treats are those you can make at home. When you are able to make these treats at home, you can be in complete control over the ingredients and the methods of production. If you have an ice cream maker, you can produce your own ice cream for use on its own, or between cookies or cakes. My mom used to make a lot of homemade ice cream when I was growing up. If you are tired of ice cream, though, there are many other options for frozen treats you can make at home.

It is very easy to make your own popsicles from fruit juice, for example. They are so easy to make and your kids can join in on the fun of making a yummy treat.  By producing them at home, you can make the treats as healthy or as decadent as you desire. Another outstanding homemade frozen treat option is the frozen banana, which you can dip in melted chocolate for a sublimely delicious, cool treat. If you have kids, this is a great way to get them to eat their bananas. The same process can be applied to other fruits, as well, so the only limits you have are those of your imagination.

Everyone loves enjoying frozen treats on a hot day. The combination of sweetness with coolness is a classic one. Sometimes, though, simple ice cream does not do the trick. This is why it is good to keep some other types of treats on hand. Whether you purchase your treats at the store, or you enjoy making them yourself, nothing hits the spot on a sweltering, hot day like a cool frozen treat.
