Tunnel to Towers Artwork

The eleventh annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk which will take place on Sunday, September 30, 2012, is a memorial tribute to Stephen Siller, the late FDNY firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice during his heroic efforts to rescue survivors of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. The race will begin at 9:30.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run is an annual run that was set up by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower’s foundation. The event first started in 2002 as an annual tribute to the 343 firefighters and first responders who rushed to the site of the 9/11 terror attacks. Stephen Siller was among these firefighters.

The Tunnel to Towers run starts outside of the Brooklyn Batery Tunnel on the Brooklyn side.

He was on his way home after working the night shift. After hearing that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center, he called his wife to inform her that he would be delayed. He headed to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel but this route was already closed to traffic. Determined to help, he hauled his 60 pounds of gear and raced through the tunnel which is roughly three miles long, to the crash site. Unfortunately, he, along with 343 firefighter and first responders were killed that day.

In particular, the foundation helps: support burn centers across the country; military personnel who have been injured; making of customized homes for these men of service, especially for those suffering from quadruple amputation; and children who have lost one or both parents.
