Taking Simple Steps to Make Me Healthy and Happy

I wrote this blog post as part of a movement by Weight Watchers to encourage people to remember that loving yourself starts with taking care of your health everyday. Though I was compensated for my time and commitment, all views, positive and negative, are my own.

As a work at home mom, I wear many hats.  I find that I spend most of my time parenting, performing household chores and stressing out over my social media job.  It seems like I spend so much time taking care of everyone else but me.  Faced with this realization, I thought about what steps I could take to focus on me.  I’m getting older and realize I need to start taking better care of myself. After a little brainstorming, I came up with a few steps I could take that would make me both healthy and happy.

Eating healthy

While I do tend to eat healthy, my biggest problem is snacking. I tend to get hungry pretty early in the day and find myself munching on some unhealthy snacks.  So, this past week, instead of gorging on those unhealthy snacks, I started making green juices packed with protein to drink as a snack.  These green juices are healthy and the protein helps me to feel full longer. Getting rid of the sweet snacks helps as well!

Exercising

The last time I went for a physical, my doctor asked how often I exercised and I was really ashamed to admit that I did very little exercise.  That needed to change.  I like to walk, but winter has been pretty brutal this year in the Northeast, so I really haven’t had the desire to go walking outdoors in the morning. Instead, I purchased a few fitness dvd’s that I could do in the comfort of my home.  I was a little skeptical of one of them which was a walking dvd, that promised a great workout in under 30 minutes, but was pleasantly surprised after working up a sweat doing it.

Fun Activities

Philip’s work schedule made it almost impossible to schedule family activities in the past, but now that he is no longer working all those weird hours, we are able to do more family activities. Last weekend we took in a Harlem Globetrotters basketball game, and just yesterday Philip and I walked around NYC for a few hours.  We got to take in some of the wonderful sights of NYC while getting in a little exercise too!

Just making a few simple changes has already made such a difference in my life. I’m feeling more energized, more connected with my family and more balanced.

What little steps are you taking to be healthy and happy?
