Why You Need More Fiber in Your Diet

This post was sponsored by Metamucil.

Are you getting enough fiber in your daily diet? The recommended intake is between 25-38 grams of total fiber per day, depending on your age and gender. It’s not something I ever really thought about, but now that it’s on my radar, I realize that I am not getting enough fiber. Most people top out at an average of 16 grams per day, regardless of how many calories they eat. Getting the recommended about of daily fiber in your diet can provide a range of health benefits.

Why you need more fiber in your diet

Types of Fiber:

There are two different types of fiber — soluble and insoluble. Both are important for health, digestion, and preventing diseases. Soluble fiber dissolves in water. Foods containing soluble fiber include oats, barley, psyllium, peas, beans, carrots, apples, and citrus fruits. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve and tends to pass through the digestive system pretty much intact. Foods containing insoluble fiber include whole grains, nuts, and beans.

Benefits of Fiber

However, with our busy lifestyles, it can become difficult to ensure that we are getting enough daily fiber. Taking fiber supplements is a convenient way to increase your daily fiber intake, while helping promote your digestive health* and this is where we can turn to a fiber supplement such as Metamucil. The main ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk. Metamucil Fiber Supplement

Metamucil makes it easy to get my daily fiber intake. I recently started taking it, in the morning with an 8oz glass of water and I can really feel a change. Metamucil traps and removes the waste that weighs you down, so you start to feel lighter*. Sure enough, after just a couple of days of using it, I notice that I am feeling noticeably less bloated and a little lighter. It also makes me less hungry between meals*, so I’m snacking less. This has been an issue for me. Since I work from home, I find myself constantly snacking. All this snacking has caused me to put on a few pounds. Taking Metamucil helps me feel really full. Because of this, I am less hungry between meals, and haven’t been snacking as much as I used to. But, don’t just take my word for it, try it yourself: http://spr.ly/JFLMeta

†Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 7 grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium husk, as in Metamucil, may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. One serving of Metamucil Powder has at least 2.4 grams of this soluble fiber. Consult a doctor if you are considering use of this product as part of a cholesterol-lowering program.
