How do you stay connected to your friends and family members who live far away? I have family all over the world and let me tell you, as hard as I try, it’s not easy to stay connected. Whenever we see each other at family functions, we always say we’ll keep in touch, but nowadays, our lives are so busy which sometimes makes it hard to follow through. Thankfully, technology has enabled us to maintain a bond of closeness that no distance can erase.  Below are some tips on how you can keep in touch with long distance family:

5 Ways To Keep In Touch With Long Distance Family

Using a landline or mobile telephone is a great way to stay in touch with relatives; this is especially true for loved ones who are not computer savvy.

Just about everyone has an email account and it is a great way to regularly keep in touch with family and friends.  Communicating through emails is free and easy and messages arrive almost immediately.  This makes it simple to keep the lines of communication open and stay abreast of what is happening in each other’s lives.

Texting and Messaging Apps

If you have an internet connection and a smartphone or tablet, you will be able to engage in real-time communicate with loved ones all across the globe via text or messaging apps.  For instance, Philip uses Whatsapp all the time to chat with his family members in Guyana.

Social Media

These platforms are remarkable tools for keeping in touch with loved ones. Updating your status and uploading photos are great for letting everyone know what is going on in your life. It is also among the easiest method of keeping in touch with larger groups. A few years ago I set up a private Facebook group for family only. Everybody is on Facebook so it’s a great way to keep in touch and share things privately.

Face to face interaction can provide the best medicine for the soul.  If this cannot be done in person, Skype is the next best thing.  Skype enables individuals all over the world to talk live online and via video.  It is the ideal remedy when you need to see that special individual you are missing.

A reliable internet connection is a must to accomplishing many of the above. Luckily, I have Verizon Fios. Their internet service is really good which makes it easy to stay connected to loved ones around the world.

These are all great tools to use; however, it is quite easy to get lost in life’s day to day demands, which makes it difficult to keep in touch. To avoid this, you can establish a ritual and remain resolute in your efforts.  Regularly send emails to your loved ones simply to check in.  You could also make weekly Skype dates and chat while eating dinner together.  Get your loved ones to sign up to a messaging App and establish a consistent conversation chain. Making an effort and being consistent will really help to keep you connected.
