Watch Old Movies

Having a family movie night during the holidays is a great way to introduce children to some classics that will never go out of style.  Watching movies like The Sound of Music* and It's a Wonderful Life* are great ways to strengthen familial bond during the holidays.

Do a White Elephant Gift Exchange

The holiday season is prime time for gift giving.  However, if your family is big like mine, the cost can really add up. Taking this route will enable the group to exchange previously owned gifts or place a reasonable price restriction on the purchase of new gifts.

Make Your Own Ornaments

Making your own ornaments can be a fun family activity and a great way to be creative and save money.  You can look online or in holiday magazines to find ideas for the types of ornament to create.

Go Out and See the Sights

If there is a neighborhood known for their awesome displays of lights, gather the family and take a nighttime trip to see it.  There is a whole block not too far from us where some of the homes are really over the top! This is a great way to spend time together and enjoy the splendor of the season.

Host a Game Night

Playing games together is fun to do any time of the year.  However, during the holidays it is a great way of escaping the cold and spending time with the people who matter most.

Strike a Pose

Taking family pictures in the snow or in front of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree is a great way to capture precious memories of the seasons.  These pictures can also be used as Christmas cards.

Collectively Give of Your Time

Getting your family together to spread holiday cheer is another great holiday activity.  You can volunteer at assisted living facilities, retirement homes and homeless shelters.  This is a good way to serve individuals who would be otherwise hungry or lonely.  The holidays are said to be a season of giving and there is much joy in giving, in and out of season.

It is a myth that you have to spend lots of money to enjoy the holidays.  There are plenty of frugal family holiday activities that can be done to make the season more joyful.
