An American Girl Story-Melody 1963: Love Has to Win

Amazon original entertainment has produced a new powerful, thought provoking movie entitled “An American Girl Story-Melody 1963: Love Has to Win.” This is the first of four original American Girl specials that will come to Amazon Prime Video. Everything is seen through the lens of the main character, Melody. The film deals with heavy themes such as the 1963 Birmingham Church Bombing and issues of race and inequality.

Melody's story rings especially true today, as the young girl (played by Black-ish's Marsai Martin) confronts issues of race and even the Pledge of Allegiance in 1963.

• “…They’re the police. How can they protect white people and attack people of color?”
• “The police don’t treat us like we’re equal.”
• “Why does the Pledge of Allegiance say ‘liberty and justice for all””’ when colored-black people in the south don’t have the same rights as white people?”
• “Papa said that white people will always hate us.”

These are some of the quotes from the movie. The film's message is largely positive, focusing on Melody's attempts to make others see that she should have the same rights that they hold so important in their own lives. The film skirts a fine line between its heavy subject matter and the knowledge-level of its intended audience, but it's easy to see that the film is meant to provoke discussions within families.

Outside of the plot, the major draw of the film is definitely the production quality. It's easy to see that no expense was spared in bringing the world of the 1960’s to life, both in fashion and in architecture.

The film's bright colors make a brilliant contrast to the often-dark nature of the subject matter, and everything is shot in such a way that the world seems to pop off the screen. The movie ended in a really positive note.  Her teacher who seemed to ignore her plight during the movie was somehow moved by an incident in the movie to reach out in a big way.  She also made a new friend at school.
