6 Ways to Eat Organic On A Budget

Organic food

Many people would love to eat organic but simply balk at the cost of buying naturally-grown, pesticide-free food. We want the best for our kitchens and the people we cook for but if the price of eating healthy is too steep, something has got to give. Thankfully, it is possible to dine healthy without breaking the bank. We try our best to only buy organic meats, fruits, and vegetables. It’s not always easy, but it can be done. Here are tips on how to eat organic on a budget:

Draw Up a Budget.
If you want to eat healthy but do not want to spend too much on organic foods, create a meal budget. A budget puts a limit on your spending and will help you track unnecessary expenses as you go along. If you stick to a budget, you will learn to prioritize your choices.

Plan Your Meals.
Another key step to eat organic on a budget is to organize your personal menu. Find out which organic foods are on sale and design your menu around what is available. Planning your meals helps you become more creative and encourage you to discover new combinations and recipes that will satisfy your curiosity and your palate.

Partner Up.
Many companies that sell organic products offer special deals and discounts to members. Visit company websites and search for promos and coupons. The type of deals vary, usually depending on what is currently available but you will find excellent deals on old favorites and new products throughout the year.

Buy in Bulk.
Organic foods and condiments are often cheaper by the pound if you buy in bulk. When buying pre-packaged foods, look for family sized packages. Check out the bulk bins in your favorite store for ingredients you often use. If you often cook with organic spices such as cinnamon, cloves, oregano and turmeric, you will love buying in bulk since you'll save more in the long run than if you bought by the bag or box. Remember, you can always cut up and freeze some fresh food items so do not be scared to buy them in bulk.

Use Portions.
Another key to eating healthy with organic foods is to follow portion recommendations. If you include meat into your meal, for example, keep it to a maximum of 4 oz. per serving. That way, you are not only eating within your budget, you are also following a healthful diet that will help you avoid excessive calorie intake.

Keep an eye out for new products.

More and more organic products are hitting store shelves these days. I am always on the lookout for organic versions of stuff that I normally buy.  Lately, I’ve been thinking about school lunches.  Although Z.E.N.’s school offers lunch for purchase, we prefer to send in lunch from home.  This way, we are sure of the ingredients and know exactly what he is eating.  One of his favorite things to have for lunch is pasta.  You cannot believe how happy I was to learn that Annie's Homegrown offers pasta products that are certified organic.

This is a brand that I know I can trust. Their Organic Shells & Real Aged Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese contains no artificial flavors, synthetic colors, or preservatives. It is produced without antibiotics, synthetic hormones, or persistent pesticides. In addition, they only work with trusted suppliers to source only non-GMO ingredients. They are also a responsible company that cares. How you ask? Well, Annie’s Certified Organic Cocoa Bunnies Cereal is made with Fair Trade cocoa, which helps provide sustainable incomes for farmers and their families

When I went looking for Annie’s I found it on sale!  Score! I found it at my local Target store and they had many Annie’s products sale for 2 for $4.00. I love that I am able to find these locally and do not have to trek all the way to Whole Foods for this. Naturally, I stocked up. When Z.E.N. saw the word “organic” on the box, he was afraid that it wouldn’t taste good.  I went ahead and cooked it anyway, and after eating one plateful, he asked for seconds.  He loved it!  Now I know that he will love seeing this in his lunchbox.

I am not super creative when it comes to packing school lunches, but if you are, you might like some of these bento box lunch box ideas featuring Annie’s products.
