See Niagara Falls From Behind At Journey Behind The Falls

Earlier this month, we drove up north to Niagara Falls, Ontario. We enjoyed viewing the thunder and majesty of Canada’s Horseshoe Falls from one of several observation decks in the area. However, to truly experience this spectacular natural wonder, a visit to the Journey Behind the Falls attraction is a must.

Journey Behind the Falls is part of the 56-kilometer Niagara Parks system in Ontario, Canada. Imagine standing in the heart of the falls, seeing the thundering water falling from behind as it makes its 50-meter (164-foot) journey. This amazing attraction is appropriate for the entire family and is even partially accessible for the disabled.

Your journey begins with an elevator ride that takes you 150 feet through bedrock. From there, you can walk to either the higher or lower observation deck to take your own photo of the show as 6 million cubic feet of water crash over the brink every minute. This view is one of the five most popular pictures posted on Instagram annually. Quick tip though, if you do plan on taking photos it would be wise to bring along a waterproof case for your cell phone or camera, because it will get wet!

The self-guided tour takes about 30 to 45 minutes and is open year round, but there is no real time limit and you can linger as long as you want. Everyone who takes the tour in spring and summer receives a free biodegradable rain poncho as a souvenir. But to be honest, The rain ponchos they gave us did a little to keep us dry. Be prepared to get wet, very wet! It was very warm the day we visited so we dried off very quickly.

Standing right next to the powerful and thunderous waterfall was an amazing experience. This tour gave us a close-up experience of the tremendous power, beauty, and majesty of the falls. You can feel the power of the falls, hear the falls roar and feel the spray. It was a breathtaking experience.

Visitors can then wind their way through a series of caverns to see the thundering falls from many different and unique perspectives. The Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal, located one-third of the way behind the massive wall of water, also provide spectacular views. You can also get a really good sense of the power of the falls. Throughout your experience, you’ll see placards of information that provide information about the history and evolution of this stunning natural wonder.Portal behind the Horseshoe Falls

Since we visited on a holiday weekend, we arrived pretty early and found that it was not very crowded, But, I’m guessing that the tunnels can get very crowded during the summer months, so it’s probably a good idea to arrive early if you want to have the experience with fewer people around.  Dress warmly during cooler weather as the mist can make visitors shiver. Non-skid soles on footwear is also a good idea as the ground is wet and can be a bit slippery.

Here’s a little video to give you a little peek into the Journey Behind the Falls experience.

The entrance to Journey Behind the Falls is located next to the Table Rock Welcome Centre in Queen Victoria Park on the Ontario side of the falls. For information on visiting hours and prices, call (905) 354-1551.
