Smart Back To School Transition Tips For Parents

Back to School Transition

Starting a new school year can be tough. If you want to make the transition easier, try to follow these back to school transition tips for parents.

Start Early

One of the best ways to make a successful school year transition is to start your shopping early. Most parents rush to get school supplies just before the year starts. You can make your life easier by going a week or two earlier and skipping the crowds.

Visit if Possible

If your child is starting the year at a new school, try to visit during the registration period. This will allow your student to find his or her classroom and become familiar with the building before the stress of a new semester begins. You don't need to set aside hours for this trip – just a quick look through the halls will work wonders.

Use the Calendar

Going back to school will bring with it a number of major events. Pull out your calendar and start planning!  You can plan for parent-teacher nights, major holidays, and even state testing days. Marking these days off on your calendar will give your child something to look forward to and allow you to plan ahead.

Contact the Teacher

The summer is a busy time for everyone – teachers included. If at all possible, get the contact information for your child's teacher early. Send a quick e-mail to let the teacher know that you're ready and willing to stay in communication with him or her this year. Don't plan on starting a conversation about your child's future at this point, but do make sure that the teacher knows that you are involved in your child's life.

Begin a Routine

If you want to save yourself a few headaches and several crabby mornings, go ahead and begin your school-year routine about two weeks before the beginning of classes. This means getting your child used to his or her bedtime and ready to wake up early each morning. This is also a great time for you to start shaking off the summer and figuring out how long it will take you to get your child ready every day.

Clear Your Schedule

If at all possible, try to clear out your schedule during the first week of school. The transition can be tough on a child of any age, and your availability will matter. If you are not able to get away from work, try to cancel as many outside appointments as possible. The first few weeks of school need to be entirely about your child's education and being available to help will mean the world to him or her.

Be Positive

Finally, make sure that you are positive about your child's new school year. If you are worried or stressed, try not to show it to him or her. Try to put anything that happened last year behind you and focus on the fresh start that your child will receive with a new term. If you can maintain a positive attitude, you will have an easier transition.
