Synopsis
There’s Something in My Attic by Mercer Mayer is about a little girl who is convinced that there is a “nightmare” living in her attic. Her parents do not believe that there is something up in the attic, so she attempts to capture it and bring it to her parents to show them. Armed with her lasso, she prepares to overcome her fears and face whatever it is that she might encounter in the attic. She also wants to get her teddy bear back. In the end, she realizes that the “nightmare” simply wants to cuddle with her bear.
A Beginner’s Transitional Book
There’s Something in My Attic features a simple story with minimal text and lots of illustration. It makes for a great book for early and beginning readers, as it features a lot of fluid, easy to pronounce words to make reading effective and fun for the kids. Most of the pages only feature a line of text, and majority of what the book contains are the water color illustrations. Mercer Mayer takes charges of the illustration as well, and her artistry shines through with each page.
Perfect for Teaching Courage
Many times, we look for stories of bravery and courage to teach children that the possibility of being brave and overcoming one’s fears is really possible. Kids have a lot of things running through their imaginations, and this kind of story keeps things in check with reality. It also serves as a great bedtime story to help them fall asleep, if they are having trouble dealing with being alone in their rooms or in the dark.
The story’s main protagonist is the blonde little girl who has set it upon her mind to capture the monster in the attic, no matter what happens. Mercer Mayer makes sure that her characters are real and relatable; even the monster is a cream puff looking creature. The vivid illustrations in the book see to it that the story is described in-depth and the personality of the main character shines through.
Conclusion
If you want a good book for your beginning readers, then There’s Something in My Attic is a great story to go for. It’s simple, imaginatively illustrated, and teaches kids a good thing or two. It’s a great addition to any bookshelf.
