Yoga Exercises For Anger Management

This is a sponsored post.Maui, Hawaii - Friday, April 15, 2016: Yoga Session during the junket for Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animations' ANGRY BIRDS at the Four Seasons Resort in Wailea.

Are you angry?  Have you ever considered yoga exercises for anger management?  A few weeks ago I went on an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii for the Angry Birds Movie press junket. If you know anything about Angry Birds, you know that they are flightless birds with some serious anger management problems.  As part of the junket, we were invited to do some anger management yoga in a beautiful beachfront setting.  I am not really a yoga person, but decided to join in just for fun.

You see, anger is a real problem amongst the population, and it needs to be addressed. A study found that 1 in 10 Americans suffer from serious anger issues. Thankfully, there is one solution that will not cost much, and it lies in yoga.

How Can Yoga Help with Anger?

Yoga has been shown to effectively improve things like mobility, strength, and cardiovascular health. But this form of exercise can also help reduce anger issues, too. This mostly relates to two aspects of yoga: the cardiovascular health and the innate meditative properties of the exercise. The meditative properties of the exercise have been shown to reduce stress, which can lead to anger. Yoga has also been shown to improve sleep. Sleep problems could lead to irritability. A healthy cardiovascular system helps keep you calm and relaxed as well. This happens because healthy blood flow ensures your brain receives necessary nutrients, which allows your brain to produce ‘feel-good' neurotransmitters.

Yoga Exercises for Anger Management

Yoga can be helpful for those who suffer from anger problems, but there are specific exercises that might help more than others. Our instructors had us do various poses that are thought to be helpful for anger management including the following:

The Child's Pose

They say that this is one of the simplest poses in yoga and also one of the most relaxing. You must spread your knees apart to keep your toes from touching each other. Sit on your heels, and bend down while projecting your arms frontwards.

The Half Twist Pose

The half-twist pose is a simple pose as well. You must sit upright with your spine straight. Then slowly twist at the waist, and bend the knee upright. If you twisted to the right, then bend the left knee and vice-versa.

The Sun Salutation

There are variations of the sun salutation pose that you will learn with experience. But this is a great pose for those seeking to relax because it is simple and meditative. One of the poses starts with you simply standing tall and straight. Then fold your hands in the prayer position and hold. After a few minutes, slowly swing your hands up. Do not let your palms part when you swing up. Do not forget to inhale and exhale throughout the exercises. But, as you can see, finding peace and managing your anger can be accomplished with yoga.

I have to say that I always thought yoga was pretty easy.  Boy was I wrong.  I really enjoyed it and will have to look for some classes in my area so I can really learn the poses.

The Angry Birds Movie will be in theaters beginning on May 20th.  Be sure to check it out.
