Arty the Smarty, which was written by Faith McNulty and illustrated by Albert Aquino, is a great story about a sweet little fish named Arty.
Arty has a mind of his own. When all the little fish swim in a certain direction, Arty swims in the opposite direction and does his own thing.
Arty is also smart and fearless. When mean old crab comes around all the little fish are scared, but not Arty. He confronts the crab and outsmarts him.
There is one thing though, that Arty can not do. He cannot make a big splash. Arty decides to pursue his dream and despite the protests of the little fish, he goes deep out to sea. Does Arty fulfill his dream? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
Arty the Smarty is one of my favorite stories. My mom used to read this book to me and to both of my younger sisters. It is out of print now and very hard to find, but if you can find it I highly recommend it.
My son loves this book as well. I don’t want to give away too much, but towards the end of the story, there is a section that involves tickling. My son loves to be tickled so that is his favorite part of the book.
What I like about this book is that it shows kids that they don’t always have to follow the crowd. It also sends the message that if you really want something you really have to go after it.
