Book Review – Now Hiring: White House Dog

now hiring white house dog

Now Hiring: White House Dog, by Gina Bazer and Renanah Lehner, is a cute, beautifully illustrated, story which is loosely based on current president’s daughters, Malia and Sasha. It chronicles their quest to find the perfect dog.

The two girls were promised that they would be getting a dog, but after months go by without it happening, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands. They post a “Now Hiring” sign on the lawn and wish for the best.

As their parents prepare for a fancy dinner being hosted at the White House, half a dozen dogs come to the house and ring the bell. They each introduce themselves via fun rhymes, pointing out their unique qualities and why they should be chosen for the position of white house dog. The girls didn’t expect so many applicants and are unable to make a decision right away because they have a party to attend. They ask the dos to wait outside.

As the last guest is leaving, all the dogs rush inside the house. The girls scurry to round them all up and the younger sister begins to sneeze. It appears that she is allergic to dogs. At this point, one of the applicants, a small black dog, comes forward and further states his case stating that he has special fur which does not cause allergies. He, of course, is chosen for the position. The girls ask about the fate of the other dogs, and they are all chosen to fill various “cabinet” positions based on their qualifications.

What I like about this book is that is offers kids a glimpse into the white house and shows that it is a real home with kids just like them. I also like the fact that it shows children being innovative. The girls in this book don’t just wait for things to happen, they make it happen.

My son really liked this one. We just purchased it last Friday, and he has asked me to read it three nights in a row so far.

I highly recommend this book for your kids or as a gift!

  • Hi,
Thanks for stopping by RHM. This blog is beautiful-congrats on getting it up and running. I love the kids’ book review aspect. I taught forever so had a good handle on kids’ books but I’ve been home for a while so I feel like I’m losing that info. I’ll check here before heading to the bookstore.
    This one looks great!

    • Thanks for visiting! My son loves to read so I thought it would just make sense to review some of the books we have read here on the blog.

  • Cute concept for a kid’s book. Can’t wait until Sweet T is old enough to read. Right now she love Baby Einstein touch and feel books. I’m hoping to get her started young!

    • Thanks for stopping by! It’s never too early to get started with reading!
