Free National Park Pass For 4th Graders

Did you know that there are acres upon acres of historic structures, national parks, ancient forests, cultural artifacts and more right here in the United States?  I was aware of this fact, but have to admit that I have only visited a few of these national treasures so far.  Last year Z.E.N. and I took  a little trip into New York City to explore Governor’s Island, a former military base and national monument.

DSC02148Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the West Point Corps of Cadets Pipes & Drums.

Z.E.N. got to explore and play with the many cannons located on the island.

We visited an exhibit inside Castle Williams, which is a circular fort built in the 1800’s.

We also got to see some cool sculptures, like this one.

We had so much fun that day!

You can have a good time too!  These open public lands belong to everyone and are just waiting to be explored. In fact, starting September 1, 2015, fourth graders can see America’s natural wonders and historic sites for free through the Every Kid in a Park program. The Every Kid in a Park program is open to every U.S. fourth grader, including home-schooled children. The program was spearheaded by the U.S. government. It is part of an overall strategy to encourage young people from all ages and all backgrounds to explore the great outdoors, and our nation’s natural and historical resources.

Every child in fourth grade will be eligible to receive a park pass, which allows them free access to any national forest, park, refuge and more. You have until August 31, 2016, to take advantage of the free pass. While these lands may be open to the public, some typically charge a fee for the day, making it slightly difficult for some families to go. The free pass will help make it easier for families to visit these beautiful places.

It is easy to obtain a pass.  Simply visit the Every Kid in a Park website and click on “GET YOUR PASS.” Once you’ve done that, you can visit www. recreation.gov to get help planning your trip, see how it works and learn more about the initiative.

Be sure to spread the word about the free pass for 4th graders!

  • Now I’ve gone to National Parks on Free Admission day, but didn’t realize they had a pass for 4th graders! I’ll have to let my friends who have kids in that grade know. Thanks!

  • How great is that?! We head up to New York at least a couple of times a year. I’ll have to take the kids here next time we’re there. At least one of them will get in for free. =P

  • I heard about this. It’s so exciting for the 4th graders. Mine just started Kinder so we have a few years. Your post is great about it.
