When I was younger, I was told that in order to get the perfect smile, I would need braces. I wasn’t thrilled at the idea and I didn’t really see anything wrong with my smile, but luckily, braces were not in my parent’s budget so it never happened.  My sister though, did get braces and hated them.  She hated them so much that she pried them off herself with a fork.  True story!  My parents were not pleased.

Now that I am an adult, I have been thinking about getting braces.  While my top teeth are fine, my bottom teeth are overly crowded and need some help. Every time I go to the dentist for my bi-annual cleanings my dentist always reminds me of the issues with my bottom teeth.  He’s been recommending a new type of braces called Invisalign.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a set of custom-made clear teeth aligners that are created specifically for your teeth and are a good alternative to traditional braces. I really like the fact that they are clear and not very noticeable. They can be used to treat a wide range of conditions ranging from simple to complex cases. The aligners are made from BPA-free plastic that will not irritate your gums and cheeks like the metallic braces. They are worn throughout the day and only removed when eating, brushing, or flossing your teeth. The aligners gradually shift the teeth into place.

Where do you get Invisalign?

The Invisalign treatment starts with a visit to an Invisalign certified dentist or orthodontists.  You can find an Invisalign-trained doctor here. The doctor will examine your teeth to determine the problem and possible treatment. After the exam, the doctor will discuss the findings and decide if you are a good candidate for Invisalign.

How does Invisalign work?

A scan with a machine called iTero or traditional impressions are taken of your teeth and used to create 3D digital impressions of your teeth. Using this technology, the doctor is able to determine how the teeth will move until they are aligned in position. The treatment can take as much as a year depending on the complexity of the problem.

Once the treatment plan is in place, Invisalign aligners are created for you. The aligners are customized for your teeth and will not irritate other parts of the mouth since there are no wires or metal brackets to adjust. Every two weeks, you will switch out the aligners until your treatment is complete. With every change of Invisalign aligners, your teeth move closer to their ideal position that helps get the perfect smile.

Inspiration saying - A smile is what you make it to be

I am really thinking about moving forward with the Invisalign treatments. When my dentist mentioned it to me, I of course had a few questions.  One of the hygienists at my dentist’s office happened to be undergoing the treatment and he called her over so that I could ask her all the questions I wanted. Being able to talk to someone who was actually going through the treatments was reassuring and makes me feel more confident in my decision to move forward with the treatment. I’m ready to get the perfect smile!

Are you thinking about getting Invisalign treatments?  If so, you should definitely take the Smile Assessment to see if it is a good fit for you.

  • It’s great that you were able to get some answers about Invisalign from someone who was currently undergoing the treatment. Learning more about the procedure before deciding to go with it is always a good idea. I’ve been considering using Invisalign, since my smile is just a tiny bit crooked, but I’ve had a few questions of my own. It’s nice to get some of those cleared up, like how the procedure would work. Thanks for sharing!
