If you're a big fan of Pinterest like I am, I'm pretty sure you've seen all those cute little DIY Sharpie marker mug designs. I had seen them a while ago but never had the chance to make one myself until now. What I really like about these mugs is that you can really customize them. You can do monograms, make them for holidays, create simple drawings, etc.… The sky’s the limit! Plus they are really easy to make. They can also make great gifts.
Since St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching, I decided to make one geared towards the holiday. It took me a while to come up with a design. I played around with what I wanted to the design to look like for a while and then I finally decided that I would go with a design that included the word “LUCK,” that also somehow incorporated a shamrock or two. Once I nailed down my idea I purchased the materials I needed and got to work. Here's how I made my DIY sharpie marker mug.
SUPPLIES:
- A cheap plain white mug ( I purchased mine from Dollar Tree. I heard that cheaper mugs work better because they have less glaze on them.)
- An oil-based metallic Sharpie paint marker (I used a gold one, but of course you can use whichever color your heart desires.)
- Adhesive stencils or stickers (I purchased my stickers from Hobby Lobby, but you can find similar stickers here and here)
- Rubbing alcohol
- Nail polish remover
- Q-tips
- Cotton balls
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Use a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol to remove any residue from the mug’s surface.
- Affix the stickers or stencils onto the mug.
- Using the Sharpie, outline each sticker. Then randomly add dots to create a cool effect.
- Let the paint dry overnight.
- Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the stickers.
- If needed, use nail polish remover and Q-tips to make minor corrections and touch-ups.
- You can stop at this step, but if you want your design to survive normal dishwashing or even the dishwasher, you will need to do this additional step.
- Place the mug on a baking sheet and then place it into a cold oven. Set temperature at 450. After oven reaches the temperature, turn the oven off. Leave the mug in the closed oven until the mug has completely cooled down.
That’s all there is to it. Even though my shamrock didn’t come out quite right, I really love how my DIY Sharpie marker mug turned out!
