Sphero SPRK Robot Toy

Are you aware of the importance of STEM? STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It’s part of our daily lives. It encourages children to solve problems, work with others, and build real solutions. STEM helps build the foundation children need for a lifetime of learning.

An easy way to introduce kids to STEM is through play. Companies have been developing a lot of new cool tools that teach STEM skills in an effort to encourage more kids to take an Interest in these fields.  One such company is Sphero. They have developed a line of fun robotic toys including one called SPRK+

SPRK is an acronym for “students, parents, robots, kids.” It is a robotic ball that teaches children how to code. It is waterproof, drop-proof and shock-proof. It’s also very easy to use. It’s Lighting Lab app lets kids program SPRK+ without any prior experience through drag-and-drop programming. My ten-year-old had it up and running in no time. He was in the robotics club at school and learned a bit about robotics when they built a robot. Nevertheless, he is far from a pro and has lots to learn.

Another great feature is the community. The community consists of makers, students, instructors, and parents. It is a place where kids can learn to code. It’s a great place to share your own creations and browse those that have been created by other kids. In fact, my son found a ton of fun activities in the community that allows SPRK+ to navigate mazes, swim across water, be a magic 8 ball, and painting pictures.

Finding toys that my son is interested in has always been a challenge.  A few years back hubby and I invested in a Kickstarter for another STEM-based robot toy. My son had no interest in that toy whatsoever. He played with it twice.  In contrast, he really likes the SPRK+. So far he has played with it for hours, which makes it a winner in my book!
