Did you know that playing video games as a family can be beneficial? For years I’ve been hearing that video games are bad for young brains. However, not only is this not true, but studies are now beginning to show that there are many benefits that come from playing video games. Not only could the right video games help improve memory and coordination, but there are numerous benefits to be enjoyed when you play with your family. Researchers believe that families that play video games together become closer, and that actually makes a lot of sense to me. It is quality time that you are spending with your family, enjoying an activity together, and ultimately bonding in ways that can help strengthen your family overall. Researchers believe that playing video games together as a family is one of the best ways to encourage better communication, while creating warm memories that can spark a sense of nostalgia every time you pick up a controller. Consider some of the following ways that you can bond as a family through a casual gaming session.
Family Game Night
One of the best ways to bring your family together through video games is to enjoy a simple family video game night every week or so. Pick a day of the week where everybody's schedule is free, and then gather around a video game of your choice to get started. You can think of things like challenges as they relate to the video game, and see how well everybody does. Take turns and mix it up with both cooperative and competitive play!
Casual Activity
Another good way to spend time together as a family is through general casual gaming. This can be a great way to get some one on one bonding with your child or spouse, and the best part is that it can be done at any time. Mention a video game that you have always wanted to try, or think about a challenge that you may have wanted to beat, and offer it up.
Games to Choose
If you need help building your gaming library, Ubisoft has developed a wide variety of family friendly games. Here are a few to consider:
- Rabbids Invasion – This interactive game emulates the television show, bringing the fun to life in your own living room. In multiplayer mode you can get the whole family involved in the fun.
- Just Dance 2015 – I love the Just Dance series. It’s a great game that can help keep your family physically active. I’m not a big gamer, so one of the reasons I absolutely love the Just Dance games is because it is one of the few games where I can actually beat Z.E.N. The new 2015 version has a ton of great new songs on it.
- Monopoly Plus – A modern spin on an old classic, this is a recommended game to play for nights in. It is based on the traditional rules of Monopoly, set with video game visuals and elements. This game is perfect for large families as up to 6 players can play at one time.
