Last night, for the first time ever, I attend The Home Depot’s Girls’ Night Out event in Philadelphia, PA. The event which was hosted by radio legend Tom Joyner, drew a large crowd of women. These women were not only there to party and have fun, they were also looking to expand their DIY knowledge and skills. This Do-it-herself event is held several times a year all over the country.
I know firsthand how important it is to learn how to do things yourself. The house we lived in when I was younger, was pretty old. It was built in the 1940’s. It was in need of many repairs, but my dad was a not-so-handy type of guy. We also didn’t have a lot of money growing up so my mom wound up doing many projects around the house herself. As she got more confident in her DIY skills, she learned how to make old stuff look new again by refinishing them. In fact, the wooden furniture that was in my bedroom was all refinished by her. That furniture is still around today and still looks great.
I had the chance to interview Tom Joyner about how he became involved in this initiative and he stated that he was passionate about empowering his audience, of which 70% are women, to learn how tackle those lingering DIY home projects. He further stated that Home Depot was a great partner because while he is all about empowering his audience, Home Depot is all about empowering their customers, so the partnership was a great fit.
At last night’s event, DIY blogger Serena Appiah from thriftdiving.com talked about how she had to learn how to take on various diy projects after she purchased her house 5 years ago. Serena mentioned that she herself learned to use power tools at Home Depot.
Serena gave a demonstration on how to use various power tools and walked the attendees on how to create a fabulous hosting tray. All attendees were then given an opportunity to get hands-on training on using said power tools to build their trays.
