There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy is one of the books in Tedd Arnold’s Fly Guy series. It is also one of Z.E.N.’s favorite Fly Guy book.  The story starts with Buzz and his pet fly, Fly Guy, who have gone to visit Buzz’s Grandma. While Buzz is in the process of introducing his pet to Grandma, Fly Guy accidentally gets knocked down Grandma’s throat and into her stomach. The real fun starts to happen when Grandma starts swallowing different animals to take care of Fly Guy, such as a cat, a dog, a goat, and even a horse! As it starts to get cramped in Grandma’s stomach, Fly Guy’s journey is to find the way out and back to his master, Buzz.

Unique Twist to a Classic

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy is a unique and refreshing twist to the classic tale of the old lady who swallowed a fly. The great thing about taking a spin on a story so well known is that is sure to be a great hit with kids. The story that they all loved is taken anew, though the familiarity of the characters is still there. Also, the story is so cleverly written that it is sure to have the kids rolling on the floor with laughter. In fact, Z.E.N. always cracks up when I read it to him.  This also makes for a great afternoon story for your kids, or something that teachers can read to the class during storytelling hour.

  • My kids have the I Spy Fly Guy and my son loves to have his sisters read him that book. I didn’t know there was a whole series of these books. Looks like I may have to do some more book shopping soon =)

  • I love books that take a new look at classics like this. Right now we’re working through Disney versions of old fairly tales (Daisylocks and the Three Bears tonight).

    • Daisylocks and The Three Bears tonight both sound interesting. I’ll have to check them out.

  • I think my kids would love this book. I still remember singing “There was an old woman who swallowed a fly!” I loved that song! You also have NO idea how bad I want to finish singing the entire song RIGHT HERE lol!
