Ways To Kickstart The New Year

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Burt’s Bees. The opinions and text are all mine

To many people, the start of a new year means a fresh start. However, few people actually follow through with their resolutions and this ultimately discourages them from trying new things in subsequent years. The key to achieving success is in making realistic goals. Here are a few suggestions on what you can do to kickstart the new year.

Make goals instead of resolutions

Instead of making new year resolutions, opt for goals.  Many people tend to think about their goals, but don’t write a plan that includes short-term, daily or weekly goals. The best way to achieve those goals is by breaking them down into a series of smaller actionable tasks.

Practice gratitude

Gratitude is the practice of being thankful and showing appreciation for what is in our lives. Practicing gratitude shouldn’t be something we only do on Thanksgiving. RESEARCH shows that being thankful throughout the year can improve your well-being. Take a few minutes every day to reflect and think about some of the things that you are grateful for.

Declutter your home

The start of a new year is the perfect time to declutter. Physical clutter can have an adverse reaction on your ability to focus and process information, according to a 2012 study from the PRINCETON NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE. Tackling it all at once can be overwhelming though, so it’s best to start slowly. Try starting with a closet, bookcase or drawer. Decluttering is an ongoing process. It takes a lot of time and effort, but it feels great to have a less-cluttered home.

Create a budget

The new year is the perfect time to get your finances in order. Take a look at how much you spent last year and think about what you can do differently this year. A budget allows you to identify priority areas in your life while also giving you room to consider investment opportunity. A well thought out budget makes it possible for you to develop discipline with regards to how you spend.

Learn something new

You’re never too old to learn something new. Learning something new can be beneficial to your career, personal life and mental well-being. This can be done by reading books, watching educative programs or enrolling for a class. You can even make time to learn a new skill or sport. By doing this, you may be surprised at just how good you are at something you have never thought of doing.

Get more sleep

THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SLEEP MEDICINE AND SLEEP RESEARCH SOCIETY recommends that adults regularly get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. The reality is that most adults don’t follow the guidelines. Getting enough sleep is important and is key to maintaining good physical and mental health. Getting into a regular routine of going to bed and rising at the same times every day is one of the most important practices you can perform for better sleep.

Be conscious of your health

Individuals often take their health for granted and this may lead to development of habits that are harmful. Instead, take the initiative to ensure you are always in good health. Setting fitness goals and maintaining hygiene can be key to improved health. Watching your diet to avoid jeopardizing mental and physical health is also prudent.
