The author of The Barefoot Executive talks to her audience like the personal coach she is. She gives advice, backs the information with facts and figures and sprinkles encouraging stories of success throughout the pages. The book is also peppered with tons of quotations. My favorite quotation from this book is in the introduction and reads as follows: “Ignore the naysayers and avoid the status quo”.
The book offers a step by step guide on discovering what your motivations are, and how you can translate that into a business. Readers start by making a list of what they can , and know how to do. Then, readers are encouraged to evaluate the space they have to work, skills they have developed, software programs they have available and the services they can offer. Coaching videos are also part of this curriculum. By reminding people that 30% of new businesses never reach their second year, she strongly encourages planning and offers strategies to help readers succeed.
This book is well written and is easy to read. The Barefoot Executive shows people how to develop a success strategy and how to find the fire inside them that makes getting up and going to work fun. However, it has one major failing; this book does not tell a person exactly what to do to actually start a business. Instead, what the book does is offer guidance on how to find the passion that makes life worth living. So people looking for a concrete answer on how to actually go about starting such business will not find it in these pages.
Despite the shortcomings of this book, I would still highly recommend it to those who are looking to get out of the rat race and go into business for themselves. This business book is very inspirational and will get you fired up and ready to start your business!
