How to Shop for Winter Boots You Actually Want to Wear

I’ve never been a fan of winter boots.  For as long as I can remember, I always got by simply wearing sneakers or my regular fashion boots.  But, since I live in the Northeast, that just doesn’t cut it especially since we’ve been getting more and more of these blizzard type storms.  So, I decided that I needed to invest in a proper pair of winter boots, but how do you you shop for winter boots?  These are the things, I kept in mind when I was shopping:

How To Shop for Winter Boots

Style.

The first thing I look at is style.  Just because there’s 2 feet of snow on the ground doesn’t mean you have to lose your style sense. When I’m doing my search, if the boots don’t look somewhat stylish, I don’t even look any further.

Comfort.

Comfort is very important to me.  I cannot tolerate shoes that hurt, so I won’t tolerate boots that hurt either.  In order to pass my test, the boots have to be comfortable.

Warmth.

Winter boots have to be warm.  What’s the point in buying winter boots to walk around on snow and ice if your toes are freezing?

Waterproof.

This is one of the most important factors for me.  Winter boots should be waterproof.  I want to be able to step into a slush puddle with out worrying that my feet will be wet.  There’s nothing more uncomfortable than walking around with wet feet.

Traction.

I remember one winter when my dad was walking us to school after a snow storm, he slipped and fell because the pair of boots that he was wearing had slippery soles.  I always remember that moment so another requirement of mines is traction-gripping rubber soles.  I certainly do not want to be slipping and sliding while walking around town.

So now that you know my requirements, let’s take a look at some of the boots I considered.

How To Shop for Winter Boots

A – Hunter Original Short Snow Rain Boots – I love the look of this boot.  It is a classic that will never go out of style. The only reason I didn’t go with these is the fact that I wanted to keep the cost to under $150 including the price of shipping, and for these boots, I would need to purchase the boot socks separately which brings the cost up.

B – Sorel Tofino Holiday Boot – I thought these boots were so cute.  They are a limited edition and once they sell out will no longer be available.  I didn’t go with these mainly because of cost, but of course, after I bought them, they went on sale. Go figure!

C – Teva Figueroa Waterproof Boot – These are a great looking pair of winter boots.  Out of the bunch, they are the only pair that look like a regular pair of boots. At the time I was looking though, they didn’t meet my price criteria.

D – Sorel Winter Fancy Tall II Boot – I fell in love with these boots.  They look much sleeker than the other Sorel boots, have a full leather shaft, and are 100% waterproof.  I was sold on these, plus at the time they were on sale, so these are the boots I decided to go with. I made a quick video describing all of the features of the boot that you can watch here:

I’m thinking of dyeing the fur black though.  What do you think?

  • I love my Sorel boots. I don’t know how I survived without them! I’m going to have to look into another pair, and the black ones you have on this list look fantastic. I don’t mind the white peaking out. It looks great.
