Book Review – Are You My Mother is a Timeless Classic

Are You My MotherThe first book that we read for the Read to Me Book Reading Challenge is Are You My Mother.  This book was written and illustrated by P.D. Eastman.  It was copyrighted in 1960.  This is a simple classic story, that teaches perseverance and determination.

Are You My Mother Summary

This book is about a baby bird who is searching for his mother.   The book starts off by featuring a mother bird whose egg is about to hatch.  Realizing that her egg will hatch soon, she rushes off to find food for her new baby. The egg, however hatches before she returns.  The baby bird realizes that he is all alone and sets out to find his mother.

Baby bird, who has never seen his mother, has no idea what she looks like.  During his search, he meets a kitten, a dog, a cow, an old abandoned car, a boat, an airplane and a crane.  He asks each of them “are you my mother?” A question to which they all respond “No I am not, I am a ____.”

Because baby bird is very persistent he eventually find his way back to the nest where he is reunited with his mother. The lesson that can be learned from this book is that persistence pays off in the long run.

The illustrations in the book are pretty basic, but they really capture the emotions of the characters.

This book is in the “I Can Read It All By Myself” beginner books group, so it is appropriate for those who are just beginning to read.  I find that repetitive phrases and simple words allow children to become more confident in reading because they know what’s going to come next and are able to memorize the text.

Z.E.N, who is currently learning the sight words in pre-k, recognizes many of the words and has memorized most of the lines in the book and reads most of it out loud along with me.

I highly recommend Are You My Mother. If you don’t already have a copy, I definitely recommend you get one.
