18 Backyard Birthday Party Ideas

So, I've been researching backyard party ideas since Z.E.N.’s birthday is next month and he has been asking for a birthday party. We didn’t have a party for him last year. Instead, we took him on a little trip to Lancaster, PA which he loved.

I usually tend not to have a huge party for him because his birthday falls at the very end of August, and it’s just hard for me to get in touch with his classmates’ parents since I’m not very friendly with all of them.  Nevertheless, he really wants to have a party this year.  We don’t want to spend too much on the party so I’ve been looking for outdoor party ideas since we have a huge backyard. 

These are some of the cool backyard birthday party ideas I found:

  1. DIY Messy Paint Party  – This party looks pretty fun if you don’t mind a mess!
  2. Kids Carnival Party – I love all the cool games and food they had at this party.
  3. Splash Party – This splash party is the perfect way to cool the party guests off in no time.
  4. Hawaiian Luau Birthday Party – I love the idea of transporting your guests to Hawaii by having a Luau party!
  5. Fiesta Birthday Party – This party is an all out Mexican fiesta.  Olé!
  6. Wet N Wild Birthday Party – This is another party involving water games. Perfect for those hot summer days.
  7. Big Top Circus Party  – Everybody loves the circus, so your guests are bound to love this circus party.
  8. Wipe Out Birthday Party – This fun birthday party is based on the popular television show Wipeout.  Fun!
  9. Lemonade Stand Birthday Party – The actual theme behind the party is “you are my sunshine,” and they incorporated a fabulous lemonade stand.  Nice!
  10. Summer Camp Themed Birthday Party – I love this party idea.  So rustic, and lots of great activity ideas.
  11. NERF Super Soaker Party  – They had a really great obstacle course at this super soaker party.
  12. Crab Shack birthday party – This is a very interesting backyard party theme.  I love the crab shaped cookies and décor.
  13. Outdoor Pirate Party – Argh!  This pirate party looks like so much fun. The bags filled with chocolate coins are perfect for this type of party.
  14. Garden First Birthday Party! – This would be a great party for a little girl.
  15. Olympics Party – This Olympics party looks like so much fun.  Love all the games and colors.
  16. Up Birthday Party – This super cute party is based on the movie Up.  Z.E.N. loved the movie, but I’m not sure he’d want to have a party based on the movie.
  17. Superhero birthday party – Z.E.N. loves Spiderman and Iron Man so this party theme might be a good fit.
  18. Cowboy Birthday Party – This party featured some great cowboy hats, a super fun lasso game, and super cute wanted posters.

  • These are some great ideas. I am actually doing a pool party for my son this weekend. I do have two more birthday parties to plan after that so I will definitely keep these tips in mind.

  • We did a cowgirl party for our oldest and it was a hit! A local farm brought over a pony and a few animals to pet for $75 – it was awesome!

  • Such cute ideas! My older daughter is a summer baby and living in Austin most of our parties have been inside with some outside activity. It’s usually just too darn hot!

  • I like the idea of the messy paint party. All of y younger kids love to paint, so they would enjoy that. Plus- what kid does not love to get messy?
